In July 2025, I’ll be taking on the The Guzzler Ultra — a 100km ultramarathon through the mountains and bushland surrounding Brisbane — in support of Trek2Health.
The Challenge
- Distance: 100 kilometres
- Elevation Gain: ~4,500–5,000 metres of climbing
(equivalent to climbing roughly half of Mount Everest vertically) - Terrain: Steep fire trails, rocky singletrack, night running, technical descents and relentless climbs
- Typical Completion Time:
- Elite runners: ~11–13 hours
- Strong recreational ultrarunners: ~16–22 hours
- Run/hike strategy: commonly 18–24+ hours
- Conditions: Cold overnight temperatures, fatigue, sleep deprivation and cumulative muscular breakdown
What Makes It So Hard?
The Guzzler is not simply “a long run.” It is effectively:
- Two marathons plus another 16km
- On mountainous terrain
- Often completed partly in darkness
- With thousands of metres of vertical climbing
- Requiring sustained movement for close to an entire day
Most competitors alternate between:
- Running the flats and descents
- Power-hiking the major climbs
- Managing hydration, nutrition, blister prevention and mental resilience throughout
It is good to do hard things in life and see what you are capable of.
Thank you for your support,
Andy
